Poppy day

The red poppy leaves are wrinkled
One by one they fall
Soldier, can you answer still?
When the bugle notes do call.*

The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marks the signing of the Armistice, on 11th November 1918, to signal the end of World War One. At 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years continuous warfare. Remembrance Day is on 11 November. It is a special day set aside to remember all those men and women who were killed during the two World Wars and other conflicts. At one time the day was known as Armistice Day and was renamed Remembrance Day after the Second World War. (1) This day is also known as poppy day because of the red remembrance poppy , emblem of Remembrance Day due to the poem "In Flanders Fields". These poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I, their brilliant red colour an appropriate symbol for the blood spilled in the war. (2)

  2. Qué interesante. Mi bisabuelo luchó en la primera guerra (y en casa tenemos la medalla al honor entregada por Mussolini a raiz de ello)

  3. @ Zarawitta, sip, yo tambien me entere hace poco.

@ Marcela, wow medalla de honor! Pero guerras, que horror. Un bisabuelo trabajo como medico en la 1a guerra y su nombre aparece en el museo internacional de la cruz roja.
