#January Joy 14: Monday mani or pedicure

I think the other day I already more or less explained how taking care of my nails (or face) or generally getting savvy in all those girly things like mastering the cat-eye have never been my thing. Lately though, I am starting to wish I was a makeup expert because I would love to be able to do this on my own (I've tried, with crying emo results. That's how I learned liquid eyeliner is not to be placed on your inner lower eyelid).

One thing that I can do on my own (well after erasing the extra borders with acetone) is paint my nails and toenails. And it really is fun. I've been experimenting with color too: for my brothers wedding I went with a green-turquoise sparkly confetti effect, and in the last weeks I have been wearing a pearly-bright-coral polish.

Now, inspired by Florence I am back to my usual natural peach but with a sparkly middle finger :p
If you can treat yourself, it is lots of fun to get your manicure done professionally. There is a salon here where you can book with your friends, sit together in this really high seats and get all pampered while drinking Turkish tea in authentic little cups. My sister and I did that one day before the wedding and it was great. Of course, that day it was pouring and we had to go out in the rain, run to the French bakery to get the macarons and then pick up my aunt and cousin at a café (not a coffee shop) in the center. Day-before-the-wedding rush. Not even Christmas-day shopping can beat it.

Have you been playing with your nails recently? What are your favorite shades? Is it really possible to have a proper cat-eye done at home?

  1. Ahhh manicures, I love them but I haven't gotten a proper one in years. When I lived in Abidjan I used to go to this GREAT salon called Alessandros, in a mall called Gallerie Super Hayat (Cap Sud) twice a month. I would pass by the whole foods store, buy my groceries and then get all pampered up at Alessandros before going back home.

  3. My friend persuaded me to get some gel extensions over the summer, I'm a bit addicted now, they make my hands look so pretty. But they ruin my nails so only get them done every couple of months. xox

    1. Yeah, gel extensions can get addictive but they do make your nails thinner. I took mine off (the ones with the turquoise-yellow sparkles) when they started to break, and decided to stay without them, but I have been playing with color instead. They do make your hands pretty.

  4. If there is something that I would happily pay, would be one manicure and pedicure!
I must confess that I can do whatever I want to myself and by myself: hair, make up, nails, waxing... but if anybody could do my nails, I would be sooooo much happier! The little problem is that when you know how good things are made, then it is difficult to find someone that fill your expectations. And then it is not worthy to pay but better doing it at home!

I think I'll get some colour for my nails today!

    Groetjes!

(I am trying to practice my english and it is soooooo difficult to set it apart from my dutch! Damn! ;) )

    1. Lucky you that are able to do everything all by yourself. It really feels nice to get your nail dones perfectly.

      What colors do you like?

      Groetjes !

(And I know, English and Dutch are separate in my brain, but Dutch and French are together and I sometimes get confused).

    2. Oh! I like all colours! I have pink, red, black, blue, yellow... Isn't it funny to try new things?

I am even thinking of getting a bang... new style for my hair! :o

  5. Yeah, I am still mostly failing at being a woman when it comes to makeup (I still can't figure out how to put on any type of eyeliner without looking like a five-year-old did it), but nails are fun!

I don't really like having painted nails on my hands (I constantly feel like there is a layer of something coating the nails and it bugs me), but toes are another story. My current favorite hue is deep purple. It's moody and colorful at the same time!

    1. Nails are totally fun. I did not use to like polish either, but I am loving it (since about a month or so?)

Toe nails are even better you can use all kinds of crazy colors, like aqua green :)

  6. I've never had a manicure, and I think I'm a bit scared too - I'm so hopeless at most "girly" things that I end up shying away. This is probably silly, as every few weeks I then complain that I don't feel girly enough!
    Your nails look great though!

Oh you should totally try, I promise it's not the scary (this comes from someone who is also pretty new at girly stuff. Before I would only wear transparent lacque, and that would be because my mother forced me to (and then an habit developed).
Maybe you can start with a very natural light pink or nude ? That you don't really see?

  7. First of all, isn't Christina Hendricks just meltingly gorgeous in Mad Men?

Secondly, I love the middle finger peach sparkles.

Thirdly, I am not too bad at doing my nails (although my idea of creative is putting a clear top coat on), but the problem is I never remember to take the polish off. Or repaint them. Right now my toenails are half peeled-off purple paint. I'm starting a new fad.

    1. Christina Hendricks is just absolutely beautiful. I also like that she looks like a real life woman.

      Thanks :)

Haha yeah peeled off paint, yeah, I have also been a trendsetter in that sense. Clear top is the best though it really makes it last longer, though my sister "stole" my little bottle and now I don't have any hmmm.
