#January Joy 17: Get a hair cut or try a new color

For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a red-head. But the shade I dream of is not red-red, it's more of a blondish kind of orange. I even have a pinterest board called I wish I was a ginger. I'm not gonna deny, I've colored my hair before. But with my dark-brown hair it is very difficult to get the shade I want, or to be precise, it is very easy to end up with a reddish-old-lady shade. But I am doing it (again). I just have to find the right off-the counter little box and hope for the best. I did get one of those yesterday, but I think I am going to have another look since on daylight it seems to promise a shade that's more red and less orange.

A hair cut is not something I am going to try though. My hair is very thin and somewhere between wavy and curly. I don't know why it is so hard for hairdressers but every time I've gone they've left me with very short hair, that instead of curling gets all spongey with humidity so I look like the boiler just exploded in my face. Or like Spongebob Squarepants. It took a while, but I've discovered long is better and whenever I ask them to trim my ends they always confuse 2 cm. with 20 cm. Lately my mom is the only one I'll let cut my hair, I know I should cut it sometime but I just can't trust anyone. Last time I cut it the ends kept pointing outwards, instead of ending nice and round and towards the inside. I ended up tying my hair in a knot , braid or ponytail, everyday, until it grew again. So, no scissors for me.

What about you? Do you have trouble finding a good hairdresser? Have you ever dared with drastic color changes?

  1. Oh I love ginger hair in the shade you like! But I always thought it looked good only on very fair complexions, and I'm more of a peach white than an rosy white person so I never tried it.
My current color is my drastic color change. I got tired of being blonde (and the blonde jokes ;), so I turned my hair medium brown (which is quite dark) with a bottle of L'oreal's casting creme color, which has no amonia and is super easy to apply it at home. I once turned it reddish/mahogany at a salon but I didn't like it (everyone else loved it though).
I also have thin wavy/hair and a lot of it, so here are my tips for finding a good hairdresser: Go to salons that cater to minorities or where the hairdresser has a hair similar to yours. My aunt, who is a diplomat and was assigned in Washington DC in the 90's used to go to the black neighborhoods to find a hairdresser, because in the posh salons they had no idea how to cut or style curly hair. Go for a blow dry first and talk to the stylist in charge of cutting (some salons like Tony and Guy have a person that only cuts), tell her what you want, what she would suggest, what you want the final cut to look like (not frizz, etc) and whether your hair would be suitable for that style. You will get a feeling of whether he/she knows what she is talking about . Or come to Cyprus and I'll take you to mine :)
If you go to Argentina, I can recommend MANY!

    1. MANY in Argentina? Do tell Marcela! I've had nothing but bad luck here. After a near mullet scare, I haven't let an Argentine stylist touch my hair again.

    2. Here I am to the rescue! ;) In Cordoba, the best one I ever found was Willy, from Hermanos Ber peluquerías at the mall "Patio Olmos". He is great with straight and curly hair (my best friend has straight and I'm curly an he cut us both really nicely). In Buenos Aires (where I think you live?) let me check the addresses with a friend (we went together) and I'll get back to you!Mientras tanto, te dejo este post del blog de una amiga donde las chicas dan ideas y dicen donde NO ir! http://fruticienta.blogspot.com/2011/02/post-descabellado.html

    4. You are naturally blond? I wouldn't have been able to tell! Dark brown looks good on you. One of my big questions is if the color will look good with my skin, you normally see it on girls with emerald eyes and freckles. But I will give it a try, if it goes wrong I will just make it all brown again. And yes I was already thinking of going to a Surinamese hairdresser, they have that frizzy curly hair and must know what to do with me. I am not sure I will go back to the Toni & Guy though, one of my major wedding splurges was getting highligts done there. I wanted a natural surfer blonde kind of look, you know sunbleached hair, not too light, a caramel kind of color, what I had already done a million times in Mexico. I think I showed them a pic of Jennifer Aniston or Jessica Alba or someone like that. They made this very thick highlights (think Monica Naranjo) in a very light blond (Lady Gaga yellow, in the telephone video) and because I had tears in my eyes and we were 2 weeks from the wedding they had to put a "color bath" all over to make it darker. In the end it looked ok but my highlights were not caramel, they were more like light brown over dark brown, you almost did not see them.

Haha en 2 idiomas, pero si no me equivoco, Alice entiende perfectamente :) .

    5. Oh Tony and Guy also did a very, very bad color on me (the famous red). It was a DISASTER. I don't trust them for coloring AT ALL.

  3. I have had the same hair dresser since I was 16 and I'm incapable of changing now at nearly 27 even though she lives on the other side of the world. I must move back. And my hair is virgin and long so I'm hesitant to try anything but I'm thinking highlights. Only catch? My hair is brunette but with very strong undertones of red and it will do nothing but get get more red if messed with. . And are red highlights weird? I don't know.

    1. Hmmm I think red highlights can look good, if it's done in a natural way. And yeah, why is it so so hard to find a good hairdresser?

  4. As a curly headed person I have developed a healthy fear of hairdressers. 99% of them do not understand curly hair. I have stuck with the same women for years because she listens to what I say. I am in the middle of somewhat of a hairnaisence actually. I have just discovered the curly girl method which involved abandoning shampoo totally and washing with conditioner.

    http://thecurlyhairproblems.tumblr.com/cgmethod

    http://www.wikihow.com/Follow-the-Curly-Girl-Method-for-Curly-Hair

    http://www.britishcurlies.co.uk/articles/article/the_cg_method_to_great_curls/

So far I am loving it. My hair feels lighter and healthier but is retaining a similar curl as the when I shampooed and used all sorts of products. I am on the British Curlies forum too and it is great to swap ideas.

I have just found out that a curly hair specialist recommended by the girls on the forum and trained in the method works in my hometown so I am going to book an appointment with him next time I need a trim. It will be the first time I have let anyone other than my hairdresser near my hair for decades but I think I can trust him.

As for the red hair love, my adopted sister has the most beautiful red blond hair. I envy it so.

    1. Oh wow I am totally going to research that method. For hair products I do tend to like the curly hair line from John Frieda (though I only get it when I see it on 50% discount) or those from Aveda (but they are also quite pricey).

Red blond hair is a dream... let's see how it goes, otherwise I will go brown all over.

  5. As a ginger girl - welcome to my clan! I love it when you get red-hair enthusiasts as so many Brits are downright offensive about gingers.

I was ginger as a child and then it darkened - technically I'm dark strawberry blonde but I have it deepened and intensified.

And Marcela? I'm very pale but yellow based, not pink based so don't let that hold you back!

    1. Oh strawberry blond is the best :)
And thanks hehe, I hope the color will go well. I'll probably post a pic :) (I don't think the change can be that drastic, except in the parts of my hair that are already highlighted).
      But we'll see ;)

  6. Oh, the hair dilemma!

So, I have in the past also dreamed of being a redhead. The thing is, if I spend enough time in the sun, my hair naturally gets red highlights, so there must be red undertones there already. One time, I dyed my hair out of the box, and it was... terribly orange. Now, I always go to hairdressers to dye my hair because the result is always better than what I can do. I did get my hair dyed red (ginger) professionally once, after college, and I love it. The problem was that the color eventually started to fade and become more orange, and I decided not to do upkeep for some reason, so the transition back to my natural color was painful. (In retrospect, I should have just dyed my hair again in my natural color, but I was too stupid to figure it out at the time). So, I too have a love of ginger hair.

As for haircuts... I also have wavy to curly hair, except it's not thin, and lots of hairdressers don't know what to do with me. Some are actually scared. But I have encountered several good hair dressers in my lifetime, so they are out there! You just have to find yours! Right now, I am really lucky because my awesome hairdresser works a few blocks away from where I live, and he is very good with my hair. When we move, I will still keep coming back to him. Good luck finding yours!

    1. Ginger hair for the win :)

Lucky you that you've fouind a good hairdresser. Truth is, I should start testing and trusting people, otherwise I will stay in the same place. I think I'll start in chinatown or minority-salons as suggested above....

  7. I too have thin rumpled looking hair and always come away from hairdressers saying never again. Color is where I am more brave. I've had my hair dyed one color or another since I was 12 (20 years!). For the last few years I've had a blue streak. I need to find somewhere to buy blue hair dye in Amsterdam because I've been here for almost three months and my blue is turning a much less attractive green. Any suggestions?

    1. Hey thanks for commenting :) And welcome to NL.
We actually have a friend who's very good (she did a hairdresser/ coloring study) and she's very hip. If you send me an email (poppiesandicecream@gmail.com) I'll send you her email / put you in contact with her. She's in Den Haag though, 45 min from Amsterdam, but if you haven't visited yet, it can be worth the trio (The Girl with the Pearl earing is here, Escher museum, the old center, the pier / beach (Scheveningen) )

  8. I've had exactly two hairdressers I've trusted in my life and both have retired from hairdressing. Which has led to a lot of scraggly ends and me being unwilling to consider shortening my hair. I also just hate how expensive a haircut is and I'm not willing to dedicate myself to a style that involves any upkeep.

The most drastic hair change I ever made was just after my first year university. I left the school year with hair long enough to sit on, and out of the blue chopped it off to my ears. Sometimes I regret it, but I learned a lot about how my hair acts and how to style my hair in a flattering way by doing that.

    1. Oh that's a lot of learning. When I was 13 or something I decided that I wanted a very short bob (up to my ears), and that's how I learnt that if I wanted curl, I better let it grow. It was just too short to have any form, and it was at that awkward puberty time when everything is changing at the same time, you are clumsy, you get blemishes, your nose is huge, and periods. Why not add weird hair to the mix too.
And yeah I also don't spend a lot of time with upkeep...
I hope you find a good hairdresser, it's so hard.

  9. Definitely try it and definitely post a pic! I've always wanted red hair, but dark red...almost "auburn brown." As close as I've gotten is red highlights (low lights?) which tend to wash out quickly. I have dish-water blonde hair which is so damn boring. Straight and not at all curly. I've always been jealous of curly hair.....I think we all want what we don't have.

    1. I did it ! I will post a photo soon. I like the effect because you see it without it been too dramatic and it looks better than it was. I had highlights (caramel blonde) done 1 year ago but at this point they were very light yellow almost white. So the color went there, and it looks quite good.
Ha we do always want what we don't have for a very long time I wanted straight hair.
