Mexican (food) cravings

Lately I have been wanting to eat Mexican food a lot. Luckily, last week there was an (alternative) Mexican party going on and we got to eat Mole, Sopes and Pan de Elote. Some people grow their own green-tomatoes and so this week I was able to make chilaquiles (fried tortilla chips, bathed in green tomatoe sauce, cream and cheese). I have also discovered that the main supermarkets carry (Colombian) corn flour and it works quite well (if not perfectly) to make tortillas at home. Are there any food items that you absolutely can't live without?

    1. It is delicious... maybe in Canada you can get some proper mexican food or ingredients / sauce in jars or cans? Look for salsa verde :)

  3. This is not related to pregnancy cravings (obviously), but I'd have to say for me it's anything chili - I LOVE spicy and can never seem to get enough...

I have to ask you (pretty please!) to share a corn tortilla recipe with us one day soon. Now that I'm gluten free I'd love to try making my own from scratch with just the masa harina...I made one attempt hand-shaping them, but it was an epic fail. Do I have to use a tortilla press?

    1. Oh these are not pregnancy cravings I think. (Mostly I am hungry and I want to eat all the food). But Mexican food, I always want! And yes, spicy food is delicious (though that I can not seem to handle so well lately).

I will definitely share a recipe soon, my first few tries were also completely mutant... it has to do with the ratio of water the dough needs. You do not really need a tortilla press (though it helps). Shaping them by hand is possible but you have to be good (meaning it is hard, it takes a lifetime of practice... unless you are good with not-round results). What I do is use a wooden cutting board with a handle as an improvised press.

  4. Oh man, I saw that picture on FB and immediately fell in love with those chilaquiles with steak! Maybe this is something you can make while I'm there *wink wink*... Something I can't live without? Comfort food! mac & cheese, chicken and dumplings, desserts... anything that makes you feel as if you're being hugged by the food! =)

    1. Oh of course I will make you chilaquiles when you are here. And yes, comfort food is the best. Dumplings are just so yummy. And desserts, oh desserts. And stuff with cream and cheese.

  5. Sometimes I feel a little.. guilty. Here I am, living in Mexican food paradise, and there you are, alone in a country that thinks the best way to eat beans is to mash 'em with boiled potatoes..

Needless to say, I think of you a lot. Often when munching on something tasty wrapped in a tortilla. I'm not sure if that helps.

I am also not sure if there is a single food I can't live without, because I love so many different things. In order to experience real food sads I'd have to cut out a whole ingredient, I think. Forbidding me from eating rice, for instance. That would cut out at least half of my favourite meal options. Cheese would also be hard, because I eat it in a wide variety of meals, but also use it as a snack food.

    1. Oh for sure you should enjoy all the food over there... and if you walk around in the Mission you will find not only restaurants, but little grocers that sell authentic Mexican ingredients, all kinds of stuff.

Cheese would be very hard to leave without. Your comment reminded me of a story... some friends of Mark that have 2 kids told them that they could choose 1 food that they did not like and not eat it ever (hoping it would be something like peas, or liver, or endives).... one kid said rice and another said pasta. So I am not sure if they were able to comply with that!! It makes it hard to cook with such restrictions.
