Obsessed with patterned-tights

Spring was supposed to arrive yesterday, but the white witch snow is still around in some places. And anyway, in this Northern latitudes Spring is about the light. About the longer days. About the flowers coming back and the lambs being born. Oh and the water chicken and the ducklings. There are deep meanings hidden there. We celebrate life, hope and birth, darkness losing, going away.

But over here it's certainly not about the temperature. My winter coat is actually an all-year coat, except for maybe, a total of 17  random summer warm days that always come as a surprise. (Like Forrest Gump said, "you never know when you're gonna get them". Oh, but I don't think he said that.) Those days can come anytime in May, June, July, August, and most commonly, in September and are often 'loose' or a set of 3 warm days in a row amidst the rainy, cooler temperatures.

But a girl wants to show her legs. And she is not crazy enough to go bare legged. (She tried this before, with goose bumps and freezing as a result). And that's where tights come in. I love to go crazy with them. They might have stolen the boy's heart. When we met, at the airplane, I was wearing brown shorts with flowery, heavily patterned tights. He later confessed that those tights got his attention and had him checking me out (score!). They can be so versatile. Dresses, skirts, shorts and tunics all get a chance. And of course the thick ones under jeans are like balm on my legs during the colder days.

Moreover... is everyone, massively going on vacation and  I didn't get the memo? The new Spring-Summer collections are already in and it does not make any sense. The shops are full of beach dresses and sleeveless, sheer pretty little blouses, swimsuits and other similar items that would be impossible to wear in our dear Low Countries for.... pretty much the whole year. Do you have any tricks to beat the cold and still feel Spring-y when it refuses to properly arrive?

    1. Thanks I love them too, fell in love when I saw them, they are Emilio Cavallini, I got them last January, not sure if at the V&D or at the Bijenkorf with a gift-card. I was so happy.

  3. Oh noes! Don't tell me that!!! Is it really just random warm days during the summer??? I'm planning my trip for the summer just because I don't want to be super cold and blah while I'm there...Is it the same level of coldness as Winter or slightly less cold? And here I was thinking I was going to be wearing sandals and the occasional short while I was there! lol... I guess I'll be packing tights, and rainboots!

    1. Oh, I clearly exaggerated. Let's see. During the summer it is definitely a LOT less cold than in the summer. We are talking between 8-16ºC for sure, and if you are lucky higher than that. The thing is you are not sure if there will be a full sunny summer sunblast like in... the rest of the World, even the rest of Europe (nothing to do with Italy, France or Switzerland where it really warms up). Most probably you will get some rain and wind. You need a jacket / coat that can take both of the above. As for sandals and shorts... you would have to be very brave and lucky. But you can bring them along with some good walking shoes (sneakers or otherwise), and the key is layering: so summer t-shirt with a sweater on top (that can be light depending on the weather) and your raincoat / jacket. A scarf (even a light one) is always useful. I do love my tights but I tend to get cold even when everyone else is kind of warm (if I am not in the tropics or in my dear Mexico).
In September it does get warm (it's like the summer gets the memo late and the warmth takes a while to kick in), for instance, look at our wedding pics: my dress was quite light and short-sleeved and I did not use or need any coat or cover up the whole day.
In summary during the summer temperatures are higher (ok for jeans, t shirt, light sweater, maybe a dress)- It's just not what you have in mind for a true summer, take into account I grew up in Mexico, it gets got, 24ºC-30C at midday even in the winter. We do get those warm summery days, sometimes weeks, but you really never know when.

    2. The funny thing is, I really don't think you're exaggerating that much! Dutchie (along with a few other people I know in NL)keeps telling me about the "horrible" Dutch weather and how Summers aren't really summers, but I thought he was just messing with me! lol... His description sounds exactly like yours! I've been wanting to get a new pair of rainboots, I guess this is the perfect excuse :)

  4. Love those tights! So cheerful.

Here in Massachusetts, spring has been late in arriving as well. In fact, on the first day of spring, we had a snow storm (just as I was ready to retire my winter boots for the season). So I rebelled and wore leggings with a skirt the next day - my attempt at infusing some spring attitude into the dreary snowy days.

    1. Yeah exactly. Yesterday I wore a tunic dress, albeit with skinny jeans, and I had to wear my sweater and coat on top, but hey, the print was super scheerful (jungle leafs and birds). Louise (Liquorice and Pumps) said it above... the trick is pretending there is Spring, rebelling like you did. Maybe we can force the weather we want into existence (except I read yesterday this weekend is supposed to be one of the coldest late March weekends ever).

  5. Awwww. Love those tights and the red sweater outfit is fabulous! I really need to do something about my wardrobe. Currently in running shorts and my husbands sweatshirt. Depressed house wife much ? Out of curiosity, do people really say low countries in English ? I obviously should know but I don't...

    1. Oh husband sweatshirts are the warmest, softest, nicest.
I think the term Low Countries really exists (I just double-checked. To be honest I translated it from French (Pays Bas) or Dutch (Neder land), which both literally mean "low countries" (as in below the sea level).
But, the term (in English) refers to the region comprising Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg (otherwise referred to as Benelux).
It's Spring! You have the perfect excuse to go get some clothes :) I hope you and little baby dragon are doing well! Do you know if you will be moving countries again yet?

  7. You've made me really curious about the weather in the Netherlands. How cold do the winters tend to be? And how much snow do you get.

The weird Canadian weather has me curious. We get cold and super snowy winters here (the coldest days where I am, in central Ontario hit -20* Celsius before wind chill) but we also get pretty darn hot in the summer (we'll have stretches us at 30* Celsius or more).

    1. Well normally it gets to slightly subzero temperatures (-5ºC), which can range up to 5-6ºC. At the coldest it can get to -15ºC, but that's an extreme. We don't get that much snows. It does snow every year, and when it happens the whole country (train system, highways, public transport) collapses. We probably get 10 cm. of snow but it only stays for a few days. People are always surprised, like it is something new, and the infrastructures are definitely not prepared. This year, the NS (rail system) decided to react by providing LESS trains per hour.
It used to get a lot colder, so that the canals would freeze and you could skate over them. Every year they hope it happens so they can hold the "Elf steden toch", a skating race going through 11 cities. Last February (2012) some canals did freeze. This year too, but only for 1 or 2 days and only in some cities, so the race has not happened.

I am afraid of Canadian winters, but jealous that you get a true summer. Oh 30ºC. (Though of course as soon as it gets too hot people start complaining about that as well. Grass is always greener at the neighbor's).

    1. Gracias :) I have to say there was a time when I was self conscious about my legs... but thanks to my blessed parents who kept saying they were pretty, over and over again, now they just might be my favorite part of my body.

    1. Thanks ! I saw those tights and it was love... and when I wore them it was even better, because of the subtility :)
They had them in neon yellow to but I am not sure I would know how to wear those.

  10. Yey for patterned tights! I should find some now "spring" is coming and the skirts are coming out the wardrobe again (I'm not quite brave enough to wear them in winter). I did wear bright purple tights on Sunday to church and got so many positive comments. Bright colours definitely help when you're wishing it was warmer already...

    1. I am not brave either as to wear skirts in winter.... sometimes I really want to, then I go outside and I chicken out.
But you are so right, bright colors definitely help (my favorite winter coat is red and I definitely wear bright colors all through the winter).
Have you seen the H&M Conscious collection ? Not to sound like a commercial but the dresses and blouses are 15-20 EUR and they definitely get you in tropical island mood!
      (And yeah purple tights!!!)

  11. The Patterned tights shown above look awesome. I like your style of carrying these tights with the shorts. The style looks elegant. I would like to try it for myself.
