Of pins and friends

Whenever I feel like I need some kind of distraction (which means, too often), I turn to Pinterest. A few months ago I pinned some cute polka dot tights. As you know, I have an obsession with colorful and patterned tights. Well, I didn't expect what happened. The lovely, kind Donna saw my pin and left me a little comment saying she had the same tights and as she was never going to use them, she could send them to me. And so she did, along with some delicious strawberry-chocolate from Japan. Donna, do you read our minds? The boy is crazy about strawberries and chocolate and we've been wanting to go to Japan since forever. Thank you so much! (You'll be getting some Dutch goodies on the mail soon).

And talking about Pinterest, maybe you've heard about the #PinItDoIt challenge? Roz and Bex at The Olive Dragonfly set it up as a motivation to actually make something out of the numerous Pinterest boards many of us have. Each Wednesday they try to post a new from pin-to-reality project, and today I am honoured to be over there with a Cheese-Zucchini and Buttermilk herb bread that I adapted on Monday out of one of those pins that make you drool in front of your computer screen. The original recipe had Olives, Spring onions, Parmesan and Cheddar, but since I did not have any of those I used what I found in the fridge: Zucchini, Shallots and Gouda. So  go visit  their blog and stay a while, it's lots of fun. I am still waiting for some baby animals pictures they promised to post soon. And you can submit your own #PinItDoIt projects as well.

  1. Oh that was really nice of her!

Uhm, I've turned some of my Pins into reality but considering how much I pin into my food boards I definitely should be in the kitchen more often!

    1. Yeah, it was super kind :) And I am so grateful for such nice cyberfriends (all of you).

I totally get you, my playing in the kitchen board is huge, I should probably be trying out more of those recipes!

  2. That bread looks amazing! If I weren't so intimidated by making bread, I'd give it a try. Ha.

Also, I am so impressed by your story about her sending you the tights and chocolate! I really think you have a way of drawing people to you... not everyone is so eager to reach out and be kind on the internet. Keep being you!

    1. You should really try this recipe, it is not difficult at all. It does not involve kneading, yeast or any fancy mixers, just your hands. Really, you just mix flour + salt + baking powder, then buttermilk with eggs and the veggies + herbs, and then you pour it in a pan, pop it in the oven, and wait. Really, nothing to be scared of.

      You need:
2 1/4 cups plain flour, 2 tsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
1 tsp salt, 120 g freshly grated Gouda (or Parmesan, or Cheddar, or any mix) 1/2 cup green olives, sliced (or 1 cup grated and strained zucchini)
8 pieces sundried tomatoes, sliced thinly, 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper, 1/4 cup mixture of spring onion and Italian parsley
2 tsp thyme leaves or 1 tsp dried thyme, 2 eggs, 2 1/2 Tbsp olive oil
      1 1/4 cup buttermilk

Preheat oven to 180ºC, sift the flour with the baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and sald. Beat the eggs with the buttermilk and olive oil. Add the fillers (olives, tomatoes, erbs, pepper, cheese) to the flour mix, then add the eggs+buttermilk+oil mix, make it homogenous, pour in a buttered / floured pan and bake for 45 min to 1 hour.

And yup, Donna's really nice :) Thanks for your kind comment, I don't know if it's something I do, but I do like to talk to people, be open... and just share.

    1. Thanks :) and thanks for sending them across the ocean, Mark and I were joking about how far they travelled.

I am so curious about your knitting. I want to learn but I have no idea where to start, and I think I will need someone to show me how to start... I went to our local wool / yarn shop and they don't have classes, actually the answer was very blunt and Dutch style: "we don't organize clubs for women". Well , ok then.

About the pins, in my case it is mostly recipes, so much yuminess and so easy to find (I love to search per ingredient and see what comes).

    2. My mother in law taught me how to cast on and start but only once. I've mostly learned via video tutorials on knitting.com and the written/photo tutorials on purlbee.com :)

  5. And now you have me aching to try an herb and cheese pull apart bread that's been floating around in my brain. Perhaps this weekend I will put the plan into action.

Those tights are super cute, by the way.
