Winter, winter.

On Saturday we went to a couple of Christmas markets, where some friends had set up stands. It was the perfect chilly afternoon, complete with strings of decorative lights, hot chocolate, warm soup and oliebollen. But did I mention it was chilly? Yup, winter is here. Last night as I went to bed I felt I would be getting a cold (but prayed I wouldn't) and this morning my throat is aching and I just feel tired. I hope it goes away fast.

There are candles everywhere... to fight the darkness that leaves late and starts early these days and this week I will finally be putting out the Christmas decorations. (In this household decorations are only allowed after the boys' birthday, but since that was this weekend I can officially start).

How was your weekend? Are you feeling the festive season already? The spirit is coming late this year, and I think we just might celebrate on a very low-key mode.

  1. The hardest part of winter is how short the days are! Hubby's in Chile for the holidays so there's not a ton of Christmas spirit in my house. I am enjoying the peace & quiet and taking the opportunity to relax, tackle some cleaning projects and have lots of girl time.

    Merry Christmas!!

  2. Candles everywhere in the city??? I love that idea! I've been seeing a lot of posts on FB about the Christmas markets in different parts of NL and it really makes me wish I was there. I haven't felt the Christmas spirit yet, or maybe it's arriving late here as well. Maybe it'll get better once I put up the decorations this week. Can't wait to see how everything looks on your end!

    1. Oh no, candles everywhere by our windowsill. Though they do had an event on December 13 (St. Lucy) where they light up the city hall and buildings around it at the main square in Gouda, which is very beautiful to see. And there are some other cities where they do an "afternoon by candle light". The Christmas markets are very nice... but it gets so cold, it's easy to get sick. I still haven't put the decorations yet, really not feeling it much (though I still have balloons and flags going on). Maybe this afternoon or tomorrow.

  3. We set up our christmas/new years tree this weekend! It was the best part of the weekend, that was otherwise filled with chores (like never-ending baby laundry). We are still so behind in buying gifts this year, time just flies so fast with a baby, but I am looking forward to the holidays.

    Those pancakes look delicious!

    1. Oh nice :) We haven't bought any gifts this year, and I am thinking we are going to do without, though there are a couple of things I had in mind, maybe I'll go get them last minute.

I do look forward to the time with friends and family. The pancakes were nice, it was the first time I tried blueberry pancakes, the only thing is that they got squished and stuck to the pan a bit, but I guess that is normal ?

  4. December birthday's always mean that Christmas festivities have to wait a bit, but at least it means you get two lots of celebration!

We're going home for Christmas so not much prep to do. All pressies ordered online, no decorating to do. Just a hire car and a busy social schedule for us!

    1. Oh going home for Christmas is the best. A few of my friends are going and every time I see updates I get a tiny bit jealous.

Have fun and enjoy your holiday!

  5. Did you make poffertjes for his birthday? Oh!

I miss winter here. Sure, it gets cold at night after the sun goes down, but in the day time it's still too warm to wear so much as a hoodie. And decorated palm trees are a special flavor of absurd.

Anyway. I hope you have a wonderful and joyful christmas! Please tell 'Koning Winter' I said hi ;)

    1. Actually it's small blueberry pancakes. We have a cast-iron pan for poffertjes... I have seasoned it a couple of times in the oven, and yet every time we try to make them we end up with a sticky mess. They are so hard to make.

I'll say hi to the winter (luckily the solstice passed and days are getting longer from now on).
I wish you a very happy Christmas :) It must be quite the experience over there... I hope you both are doing well, we were thinking about you guys the other day!
